July Issue: Still Life

A Life Lived Once

Joyus chaos.
How do I capture
the feeling of flying
with my feet planted
firmly on the ground?

How do I say
I was choking on love
when my airway was clear
and the thorns in my lungs
were no where to be found?

How do I dance
with the giver of love
when the giver of love is in me?
When we journey on– to places unknown
how do I know that the road
sets me free?

How do I show
that with friends by my side
the stars are not a wasted dream?
And could I explain that first moment of love
as a beam of the sun on a cold ocean breeze?

And why couldn't I just
paint the world as it is?
As a photograph sees?
Whatever I live
contains something lurking
and growing beneath.

A life lived once
isn't lived enough for me
so I had to go back
and capture the thing,
to make it do the dirty work
of living for me.
