Our Manifesto

The Café Society was conceived in the summer of 2019 as an online space for young female writers from all corners of the world to share their work. Although life eventually got in the way, and the initial Instagram account was abandoned, five of these writers remained close bosom-friends. Six years and plenty of debauchery-filled meet ups later; they are still devoted friends however, the account is run by one.

The term The Café Society itself was coined by Maury Henry Biddle Paul in reference to the ‘bright young things’ who gathered in fashionable cafés in popular cities in the late 19th century. However, our vision entails something much more inclusive. We feel particularly passionate about young female writers, as well as encouraging artists from all ages, genders and walks of life to share their interpretations of our prompts.

The Café Society‘s monthly prompts focus on the theories and techniques of famous authors. Our aim is to widen the audience of these obscure practices, gaining insight into how they can be applied in a contemporary way. Additionally, these prompts will be paired with interviews to allow readers a view into the practice of the modern-day artist.

The Café Society is an online magazine featuring original prompts which focus on the mind and the work of the artist. All works submitted come together at the end of the month to construct a catalogue of creations.

We accept absolutely anything you create in fact, the stranger the better. Articles, essays, paintings, diary entries, shopping lists, poems, videos, sketches, photographs, stories, scraps of prose, love letters, etc. Please find details on how to submit your work in our ‘Submissions’ section, follow us on Instagram with @thecafeesociety and subscribe to our newsletter to be notified each time a new prompt or issue is posted.
