July Issue: Still Life

Term

i was carried past term.

in my mother’s womb, a girl, a boy, an ‘other’.

now i am a fractured mirror, reflecting the woman i was meant to be, while acting as a woman i am not.
my mother, suffering artist, suffering woman.

me, her fractured sculpture, ruptured in the kiln.
a girl, a boy, an ‘other’.

who was i supposed to be? what did the original sketch look like? not like this, surely.
as time persists, i linger between the walls of change and conformity. each year a mallet to my identity: crack, crack, crack.

i was carried past term.

now in my adult youth, a boy, a boy, a boy.
